Pedagogy: Information Studies and Design education

Abstract: Design pedagogy and education traditions are of value to the information studies field (IS) because they are a fruitful, although perhaps not widely recognized, resource with which to address expanding expectations of IS graduate skill-sets. These skills include both content-related skills (information and knowledge creation) and behavior traits (flexibility and creativity). Transdisciplinary approaches of IS education can address of the challenges facing IS graduates programs. That is: how can IS curriculum be adapted, in a timely fashion, to address the increasing demand for information professionals who can not only organize, manage, retrieve, and preserve information, but also create or design it.

Redesign the iSchool Website


The task—Propose a new website design for the School of Information. Overhaul the site’s visual presence. Devise comprehensive changes to the site architecture and address content. Conduct user research through interviews, surveys and polls to ground design decisions and indentify needs of a diverse set of project stakeholders.

My efforts demonstrated an ability to collaboratively address the needs of a diverse user community. The project required providing leadership within my peer group while cooperatively delineating direction and allocating responsibilities. Further, it required clarifying and synthesizing the findings from several user research activities in order to create designs that addressed the site’s major problems.
